Principal Investment

We invest where new capital changes the outcome.

Blackbear is a principal, not a fund manager. The partners' own family capital is committed to every transaction either independently or alongside third-party equity, into situations where stress, complexity, transition or a broken capital structure means more of the same capital will not solve the problem.

We take control or significant minority positions with board representation, install financial controls and management where required, and stay involved through operations to exit.

Five principles
01Special situations

Stress, complexity, transition or a broken capital structure, where new structured capital unlocks value.

02Aligned capital

The partners' own family capital is invested in every transaction. Our downside is the same as our co-investors'.

03No fund constraints

No vintage, no strategy or geographic mandate, and no obligation to deploy or exit on a fund clock.

04Active ownership

Board representation, management change, financial controls and operational execution, with active involvement throughout.

05Structured-finance edge

Acquisition and growth capital optimised using the partners' structured-finance background.

Portfolio

Selected principal investments

Blackbear has taken principal positions in businesses across hospitality, beverage, branded residential, rail infrastructure, renewable energy and renewable manufacturing and distribution. In each case the investment was made where new structured capital and active ownership were what unlocked value, not more of the same equity.

Hospitality

Portfolio of full-service hotels

Acquired opportunistically, financed, asset managed and exited profitably.

Hospitality services

Hotel management and advisory platform

Strategic investment in an established operator to maintain and grow business lines and establish as an institutional operating partner.

Branded residential

Prime residential redevelopment

Development of a single high-value residence in a supply-constrained European market.

Rail infrastructure

Rail maintenance, service and overhaul business

Significant shareholding in a Swiss-owned rail maintenance business with German subsidiaries, including a new state-of-the-art 10,000 sqm train depot in Bavaria.

Hospitality and beverage

Distillery and visitor business

Controlling stake in a distillery of historic significance in Scotland. Distressed opportunity with significant repositioning and growth potential.

Renewable energy

Distributed solar aggregation platform

Lead investor in a platform using proprietary technology to source solar energy from granular producers, selling that power to the grid for solar credits and finding SME buyers for those credits through distributed generation.

Renewable manufacturing and distribution

Solar panel and cell manufacturing

Shareholding acquired in a growing manufacturing and distribution business.
